Nervi is located in the east part of the city of Genoa on a cliff, where a two kilometers fascinating and romantic Anita Garibaldi promenade slowly winds.

The hills over the sea grant a pleasant climate to this area and made it the favourite holiday destination of rich tourists, especially the ones coming from the North-East and Russia to get through the most cold winters and cure tuberculosis, thanks to the air of the sea. Between the 17th and 19th century even the Genoese aristocracy and middle class chose Nervi as a residential area, building wonderful villas. The Palm tree-lined street of the district still bares witness to the Belle Époque period with many buildings in Liberty style.

The most elegant green area of Genoa is located here. The Parchi di Nervi, that you can access from the promenade that starts from the district centre, extend on 92000 square meters of land between the via Aurelia and the sea and host around one hundred botanical species. Among them you can admire palm trees, cedar trees, 5 monumental trees, an important rose garden and some museums, set up inside the antique villas which now belong to the Municipality.

In less then one square kilometer of land, the rich and important museum centre of Nervi allows visitors to enjoy the many collections of Modern and Contemporary art of the city of Genoa: there are paintings, sculptures, graphics, furniture and decorative arts.

Villa Saluzzo Serra hosts the Galleria d'arte moderna (Gam) with many collections from the 19th to the 21st century related to the Ligurian artistic production. In Villa Grimaldi Fassio the Raccolte Frugone are preserved, these are Italian and foreign art collections related to the Belle Époque period. Villa Serra Gropallo hosts the Wolfsoniana, specialised in decorative arts and propaganda including the period 1880-1945. Beside these museums, Villa Luxoro (currently closed for maintenance) displays Italian and foreign collections of works of art and objects.

Among these points of interests you can admire the Torre Groppallo or “hay tower”, located at the beginning of the Anita Garibaldi promenade, 16th century look-out building for Saracen vessels.

Behind Nervi, rises the hill of Sant’Ilario, at its feet you can find the old train station, closed in 1959 and mentioned in the song “Bocca di Rosa” by Fabrizio De André.
