Via XX Settembre
Via XX Settembre is a street that enchants with its architectural beauty and its range of shops, food and history.
It is one of the city's most central and busiest streets, but its origin is controversial due to the demolitions of several buildings that were necessary to build it as part of new urbanisation.
About a kilometre long, it is lined with Art Nouveau buildings on both sides, and halfway along its length is the Monumental Bridge, which dominates with its authentic grandeur and beauty. The street connects Piazza de Ferrari to Piazza della Vittoria.
The most fascinating feature of Via XX Settembre is its long porticoes embellished with mosaic floors and decorated ceilings, neo-Gothic triple lancet windows, bay windows and cupolas. The shops under the arcades offer a wide choice of products, and among the shop windows, one cannot fail to notice the beauty of the 'Palace of the Giants' with its eight statues of telamons supporting imposing columns.
For food lovers, the entrance to the Mercato Orientale, accessible directly from Via XX Settembre, offers a surprising experience. The market is a riot of colours, scents and flavours with its stalls selling seasonal delicacies, colourful fruit and vegetables and regional specialities including cheeses, meats, cold cuts and fish. Inside, you will also find the MOG, a real food market open every day from 10 am to midnight, where you can sit down for a snack, an aperitif, lunch or dinner.
Finally, amidst art and history, there are sacred monuments to visit such as the Augustinian Church of Nostra Signora della Consolazione, also known as the Church of St Rita, and the Church of Santo Stefano, which dominates from above next to the Monumental Bridge.
