Genoa and its sea
Genoa and its sea. Or rather, Genoa IS its sea. The sea has always been a fundamental element of the city, and indeed the very raison d'être for a city that has for centuries been one of the Mediterranean's most important ports: it is from the privileged vantage point of the sea that Liguria’s capital presents itself at its best, appearing like a magnificent theatrical backdrop, to those who reach it by boat.
And in fine weather, the sea in Genoa becomes a “world” in which to immerse yourself offering beaches and cliffs that are simply an urban extension of the two Rivieras, the Western and Eastern, the point where they meet and the apex of that arc of land that is Liguria.
Talking of outdoor activities and sports in Genoa, one naturally thinks of the sea. Many may not realise it, but just beyond the centre waterfront Genoa boasts a truly splendid sea, with excellent water quality and a rich marine environment.
For snorkelling enthusiasts, it is easy to explore the typical Mediterranean environments from any of the small beaches nestled among the rocks to the west, discovering its abundant and varied sea life, while the city also offers a number of diving centres for both amateur and more experienced divers.
Both in the Porto Antico and the Marina Genova in Sestri Ponente there are schools and services for sailing, while to the west you can find everything you need to go canoeing or kayaking. The city's entire coastline, from Vesima, Pegli and Corso Italia to Nervi, is perfect to simply enjoy a refreshing swim and a sunny day.
And for a more exciting sea experience, from Porto Antico, there is also the possibility to go whale watching or to take a boat trip to Portofino or the Cinque terre.
