Theatre Museum and Library

Theatre Museum and Library

The museum is open from Monday to Friday 8.30 - 13 only by reservation.

Books, scripts, photography, costumes, autographs. The Theatre Museum and Library was born in 1966 as a sector of the Teatro Stabile di Genova to preserve theatrical materials. Today it has become a foundation for the historic and critical study of theatre, scenic art and the conditions of the Italian actor, since the beginning of the 18th century.

The rich library is specialised in drama theatre and cinema materials and owns more than 42 thousands volumes and one thousand Italian and foreign magazines. In its archive almost 72 thousand autographs, 69 thousand photographs, 1300 scripts, 4 thousand documents (among them there are drafts, sketches, spoofs, original designs, boards and posters), 62 thousand news snippets and 10 thousand theatre programmes. There are more than 60 book and archive funds, donated by and dedicated to the theatre and culture people to whom they belonged.

The museum even owns a collection of theatrical costumes and a puppet theatre that dates back to the 19th century: the Teatrino Rissone, now displayed in the Sant’Agostino Museum of Genoa.
