The Old Port and the Aquarium: the new waterfront redisegned by Renzo Piano

The Old Port of Genoa, where a charming waterfront plaza, the work of famous Genoese architect Renzo Piano, offers tourists and Genoese alike a wealth of opportunities to experience cultural and recreational events and activities, enjoy splendid panoramic views of the city and its harbour, and visit some of Genoa’s best-known attractions.

Among these, the Aquarium of Genoa, Europe’s largest exhibition of aquatic biodiversity, covering an area of more than 27 thousand square metres, with 71 tanks and over 15 thousand animals from 400 different species.
A genuine voyage of discovery when it comes to undersea life and one that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. The tour covers various sections, showing the visitor dolphins, sharks, penguins, manatees, jellyfish, seals, tropical fish and Antarctic wildlife! You can stroke the rays in the fascinating tactile tanks, and there is an area dedicated to reptiles and amphibians from the rainforests and fresh water environments.
There are 4 open-air tanks in the Cetaceans Pavilion, designed by Renzo Piano, and 19 tanks in the Biodiversity Pavilion, set inside the Nave Italia, a genuine ship, redesigned and moored in the Old Port.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Aquarium of Genoa has a brand new look and is now the largest, most spectacular aquarium in Italy as well as in Europe. Visitors can now enjoy a thrilling new immersive experience with innovative scenographic settings, next-generation digital installations, a brand new light and sound design and a packed calendar of events that will take you into the heart of a place where life is renewed on a continuous basis.

Not to be missed is the VR Abyss Room, Italy’s first permanent virtual reality room, offer the experience of a journey into the depths, and a Fish Making room, a multimedia area with 9 game stations where you can create your ideal fish and place it in the virtual aquarium.

But the fun doesn’t stop here!

Not far from the Aquarium is the Galata Sea Museum, the largest museum of its kind in the Mediterranean, with its brand new “Scagni e Vapori” exhibition about ship owners, the submarine, Nazario Sauro and a pirate galleon, moored in the dock.  There is also Bigo, a panoramic lift, the Biosphere, the Città dei bambini e dei ragazzi, an educational museum for kids, and the  Emanuele Luzzati Museum, and the Museum of Genoa, the oldest football club in Italy, as well as Eataly.
