Fortifications and towers of eastern liguria: the parco Urbano dei forti
The fortifications of the 19th-century defensive system erected by the Savoy around Genoa comprise more than just the forts in the Parco delle Mura; worth noting in the east is the area called the "Parco Urbano dei Forti" (City Park of the Forts), where the city's easternmost fortifications stand tall: the tower of San Bernardino, the Quezzi Tower and Fort above the neighbourhood of Marassi, the long Forte Ratti, Forte Richelieu behind the San Fruttuoso neighbourhood, and the recently restored Forte Santa Tecla above the San Martino hospital.
The itinerary's main access sets out from the centrally located neighbourhoods of Marassi and San Fruttuoso and unwinds along mountain-ridge hiking trails marked by the FIE - Federazione Italiana Escursionismo (Italian Hiking Federation). This path, both easy and interesting, offers superb views, as well as the chance to explore an as-yet little-known area of Genoa.
