The Zecca - Righi funicular
Built between 1895 and 1897, this funicular provides a link between the city centre and its heights.
A must for the city’s commuters, it is also popular with tourists, because the rapid change in the landscape during the trip upwards is striking, shifting from the traffic of the busy city centre up into the hills to the start of trails that lead to the city's ancient forts, with their unique landscape.
The line is especially popular with hikers, cyclists (bicycles are carried) and families looking to treat themselves to a day trip out of town. The station of the Madonnetta deserves a special mention: it opens onto the Sanctuary of the same name, where you can admire a year-round Nativity scene depicting aspects of daily life in mediaeval Genoa.
