The old town. Lost (and found) in Genoa
Becoming lost, only to find yourself, to lose yourself again, and once again to find yourself. Over and over… in a sequence that could continue indefinitely through the streets of what is said to be the largest historic center in Europe (https://www.visitgenoa.it/centro-storico).
A kind of labyrinth of Janus, the ancient Roman god of thresholds, transition and passages. He rules the passage from one era to another, from one world to another. A deity to whom the city of Genoa is dedicated. Each secluded square, glimpsed from an opening on the side of an alley, is a new world and the command to always know “You are here” and to be pinned inexorably to the grid of a map has no power. To be “lost” here, is an experience of being “in the moment” of being truly “here”, geographically. it is practically impossible to get really lost, as the safe guided tours routes are only ever a short step away (https://www.visitgenoa.it/conosci-genova).
Genoa is a city of thresholds, of steps suspended between sliding doors that can open or close worlds, both physical and emotional. A ray of sunshine pierces the dense canopy of roofs so close to each other that they practically touch, a white cat lazily crosses the alley. Who would have thought that getting lost, at least a little lost, could be the best way to find yourself?
