Palazzo Nicolò Spinola

Palazzo Nicolò Spinola - decorazione della facciata

The palace was built upon a pre-existing medieval building, as clearly visible by the black and white striped columns on the ground floor delimiting the porticoes overlooking Vico Dritto.

This was the main road axis in Genoa in the middle ages, winding from Porta dei Vacca to the slopes of the Castello hill. The palace was restored by Nicolò Spinola and his successors in the XVI and XVII centuries.

It stands out thanks to the scenic façade painted by Ottavio Semino (1650) and Gio.Andrea Ansaldo (circa 1610).

The frescoes, depicting epic stories and allegories, are sadly nearly visible nowadays. The monumental portal was likely sculpted by Giovanni Giacomo Parraca da Valsoldo around 1560.

In the hall on the second floor there’s a fresco depicting a banquet of gods scene, portraying the four seasons and beautiful landscapes dating back to the second half of the 1500s. The decoration was heavily damaged during World War II.
