Ponte Monumentale
The Ponte Monumentale is an architectural marvel built in 1895 in place of the Porta d'Arco of the Mura Nuove, and is an important historical symbol of the city. It was designed by engineer Cesare Gamba and architects Ronco and Haupt in 1890, and since then has continued to amaze visitors from all over the world with its beauty and majesty.
The bridge crosses Via XX Settembre longitudinally and stands imposingly tall at 21 metres. The supporting structure consists of a large brick arch, while the arches below are supported by marble columns with sculptural decoration in stone. This decoration, together with the breathtaking view of the city from the bridge, are two of the main reasons why tourists choose to visit this site.
On the niches are engraved the names of the fallen of World War II, so as to pay tribute to the victims and remember the tragic events that marked the history of the country. Moreover, on the side of the bridge, you can admire the awarding of the Gold Medal to the city of Genoa, which is an important recognition for the valour and courage shown by its citizens during the war. But that is not all: on the other side of the bridge, there is also a marble plaque representing the surrender document of the German enemy troops.
The bridge has a lift that connects Via XX Settembre to Corso Podestà, which can also be reached by stairs. The bridge also reserves a pleasant surprise: from its interior you can access the Genoa Underground, a real hidden treasure that contains the history and legends of the city, through tunnels, underground passages and caves that can only be reached by guided tours.
