Terminal Crociere - Stazione Marittima
The Stazione Marittima situated in Ponte dei Mille is an elegant building dating back to the first half of the twentieth century. It boasts a centuries-old history: in the middle ages the area was the boarding point for pilgrims bound to the Holy Land.
In the middle of the nineteenth century, it was the mooring dock for the large sailing ships for which the San Tomaso dock had been especially built.
As the number of Italians emigrating to America outgrew, it was necessary to build the new mooring dock, overlooking Principe square railway station and dedicated to Friedrich Wilhelm, prince of Germany.
The brand new Stazione Marittima cruise terminal in Ponte dei Mille opened in 1930, boasting outstanding and monumental dimensions. Thanks to its architectural style and to its interior decoration, it remains one of the most significant examples of twentieth-century architecture in Genoa.
Its halls welcomed passengers travelling on the biggest Italian ocean liners providing scheduled connections to the Americas. Some of them are portrayed in the photo gallery set in the first hall: Harry Truman, Orson Welles, Igor Stravinsky, Anthony Quinn, Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Elia Kazan.
Nowadays Stazione Marittima is the modern cruise terminal in Genoa.
